Meet the team

The project is divided in 4 groups: Pre and post processing, Client, Server, and Communication. To find out more details and information about who are we and what we do ,you can refer to the categories provided below .

    forum.phpPROFESSORS AND RESEARCHERS

    In the list below one can find the people who coordinate and supervise the gene@home project. Some of them are responsible for the theoretical portion and others for the laboratory sessions. Besides the lectures these professors have met several times with the students in order to discuss issues and project advancement.

    forum.phpPRE AND POST PROCESSING GROUP:

    They provided the networks to be expanded and they have downloaded a gene network of about 7000 genes from the Agris database, Arababidopsis Gene Regulatory Information Server. This network must be divided in sub networks which are composed of 1000 genes.
    The pre and post processing group also has applied different methods to extract the sub networks like;
    a. Removing hubs which are the genes with many connections.
    b. Looking for mostly connected components which are possible applying the Markov cluster algorithm or linking clustering.
    c. Extracting the sub network composed of its neighbours.
    In order to provide the gene expression data so the algorithm can expand the network, the members of this group have downloaded the experiments on plants and their pathogens, as well as 143 experiments on Arabidopsis from PlexDB database.
    Another task for this group was to implement the internal validation of the PC-IM.

    forum.phpAPPLICATION GROUP:

    The members of this group have implemented the Peter-Clark (PC) algorithm and the PC-Iterative Method (PC-IM), a new method to expand networks which has been developed by the DISI-University of Trento and the Edmund Mach Foundation.
    The Application group compiled BOINC under Linux and developed a C++ version of the PC algorithm. They also wrote a library to have an interface with BOINC API which uses a particular type of variables.

    forum.phpSERVER GROUP:

    This group studied the PC-IM in R and then implemented it in C language. They tested the BOINC Server in a virtual machine. One of the tasks was also to setup the BOINC project in Linux Server: creating the project, making the configuration of all the needed components, and testing the outcomes obtained from the Client group. They also did the distribution of the data to the Client.

    forum.phpCOMMUNICATION GROUP:

    The main task of the communication group is to share with the world a scientific research and find volunteers to help them with the project. For this reason the members of this group have developed a website in order to exhibit all the work that the four groups have done.
    The purpose of the research can be found in the short and scientific description. Some of the working details were to program the website code, elaborate the structure, and prepare contents.
