Hello,

Don't you think it's time to remove the "Invitation Code" ?
You would have a lot more crunchers I think.

Best,
Phil1966

it seems / looks like admins and/or scientists don't care about increasing their project's computing power :/ ???

When I PM'd the admin in December, this was the reply I got in regards to this subject.

The only reason we are still keeping the invitation code is because we don't completely trust our server (a small one) but we did some tests and it was able to behave well so the next phase will be to 'public' the invitation code (written on the web home page). I'm also, in the spare time, designing the badge system.

We would like to do 'badges' and 'public invitation code' at the same time.

Yes, we do care but.... we have some kind of 'resources' problem
- The server is a small one, it is a virtual machine inside the University data-center. Upgrading it is not only a money issue but also involves a lot of bureaucracy.
- Our scientific pipeline is complicated, we start from experimental data, filter and prepare them for boinc, then we need a lot of time for handling the results, write scientific papers and push the results back into (non virtual) experiments. It may be strange to understand but having a "very strong" increase in computational power may lead just to a situation where a lot of results are stored somewhere waiting for a long time before being analyzed.

The last one is obviously a 'human' resources issue. We are hardly trying to get some grants in order to hire people but it's not so easy. (and writing proposals is also a very time consuming task).

Anyway, we will have a meeting in the next days and we will discuss about this. I will tell you something about.

BTW, thank you all for your interest and participation.

No, it isn't ... We surely need more power. Our ongoing project (and we have more in the queue) will end in about 5-6 years, at the current pace. We need to upgrade the system (this is not so easy). In the meantime I can put the invitation code on the front page of the website (like SRBase). I have to check this issue with the other members of the team.

Hello ! Badges are also a great "MOTIVATION TOOL" :) There are a lot of "Badges Hunters" within the BOINC Community ;)

Another issue : When you try to attach the project to a new crunchbox, the message "the project is not accepting new user" can greatly reduce your computing power. (no information at all about the invitation code or the creation of an account via the website.)

=> 2 "easy" solutions to incrase your crunching power : Project badges (not based on the ranking but on the credits) + easy attachment to the project.

Best,

NB : RE : the page to log in : http://gene.disi.unitn.it/test/home.php

The word "test" might be removed if you are not running BETA WU's anylonger.
Might be worth to add an option to run the "test" application i/o naming the project xxx text xxx.

Why ? Some teams / users don't crunch on test applications / projects, and these projects are not included in challenges such as the Formula Boinc.

Best Regards,

Phil1966

the page to log in : http://gene.disi.unitn.it/test/home.php

This was definitely an error we made when we started the project. I didn't know it would be so complicated just to change the url name. I didn't find any simple way (other then manually messing up with the database and apache configuration files) to change the "test" word to something like "boinc"...

I can put the invitation code on the front page of the website

We decided to do this ... at the end of September... mainly because I will be away the first three weeks of September and I wanted to be close enough to the server in order to catch any possible issue as soon as possible.

the project is not accepting new user

This is obviously a communication error embedded inside the Boinc client. A message like "Please create an account first through the project's website" would be way more revealing. (to ask to the boinc_dev mailing list)

badges

yes, I solemnly promise (;) to do something in September/October...

"Users in last 24 hours: 110"

It looks much better now ;) And I don't have any issues with download/upload or webpage so I assume that the server is holding up? :)
