Message 1992 - Posted: 10 Oct 2020, 19:12:57 UTC - in response to Message 1987.

There is no GPU app available at TN-Grid.

So what is running on the Radeons AMD lent you?

Nothing at the moment, AMD will grant us access in about a month.

Anyway, we will use them to try to develop a slightly modified version of our algorithm, suitable for gpu-style parallelization. Also we will use their specific deep learning power to help us better understand the whole thing (gene expansion, covid, causality etc).

Looking at the specs of those AMD things, they don't seem like much more than some of the volunteers I know crunching with several cards for Milkyway and Einstein. If you can get OpenCL working nicely, collectively we'll be able to do far more than that AMD thing. Have fun playing with it (or tearing your hair out trying to get the program converted! Folding@home managed, WCGrid and Rosetta didn't.) I have 19 TFlops of GPU sat here....

They dont want to.
Server cant really produce enough WUs for more users

This http://gene.disi.unitn.it/test/gene_science.php implies there's about 5 years work to do on the current project, not to mention the on hold ones. I'm sure they'd love more computing power.

By the way, how do I make the URL get named in here (i.e. some of the words of this sentence become the link), is that possible with BB tags or whatever they're called? I've seen people do it in other forums but maybe they use different code.

They submitted a grant request for a new server several months. Not sure how that went.
If they can't get a new server, then they cannot have many more volunteers.
That's why this project isn't listed in the official BOINC project list.

Looks like the same on other BOINC forums:

Type the URL, select it and hit the URL button. Then add = on the first URL bracket so it looks like [url=Enter the URL]. You then name it whatever you want in between the 2 brackets.

How much do they need? How many of us are there? I'm sure a lot of us would crowd fund it. It wouldn't be very expensive between 1000 people. SETI raised quite a bit of cash by asking folk.

Ah, thanks. I guess there's a manual somewhere. I thought it maybe wasn't a function here, since on (I think) Einstein, you get a box asking for the address and the wording. But they have a non standard setup.

They can't raise resources from crowdfunding because they are based in the Thrento University, so they need to follow the "official " way, which is more longer and buricratic

If they can't accept charitable donations, the bureaucrats need sacked right now. That is absolutely beyond a joke.

Must get a better server before releasing GPU WUs.
Go CUDA go fast.

OpenCL please. I can't afford overpriced Nvidia cards.

Server can't mostly support the crunching power we have now with few cpus, it is "useless" to put any effort in a GPU version. What for?

It seems to manage ok now. But yes they might need a bigger one (or just upgrade it) for GPUs. It can't cost that much for some RAM or a disk or something. And if work can be completed many times faster, well that's the whole point of this science. To get the answers quickly and save lives!

Hi Valterc
Any update regarding AMD HPC support?

I would be interested in any news surrounding this topic as well. Could the resources already be deployed and put to use? Or any plan how to best deploy them in the future to accelerate the work here? Thx

Still interested in how these resources are being used if at all... If you're allowed to publicly disclose this information, I would appreciate sharing them with us. It's been a while... Just saying

The granting of the aforementioned resources has been delayed, don't know the reasons, I guess that they were actually building up a new computing center from scratch and had some problems. Anyway, they told us to wait until the beginning of January.

All right! Thanks for getting back to us. That's definitely very unfortunate especially after all the buzz they intentionally created around this project (corporate press releases, own website) and their huge public announcement. If the resources aren't yet available, I guess it will also impact the other universities and institutions that were also promised access to the HPC resources. Hope they'll figure it out rather quickly :)

I hope you have access to the AMD resources by now.
