2) Message boards : Number crunching : New BOINC versions 22 May 2023 (Message 3264)

NOTE: new version is v7.22.2 -- it is NOT a required upgrade for TN-Grid project, but it allows the user to specify how much CPU work is done when machine is "idle" and how much when machine is "used".

Better settings.

I also recommend to enable ECO-mode, 65 watt TDP limit, via BIOS. (Part of AMD PBO settings)

This gets you 80% performance at only 40% power budget, and effectively doubles your power efficiency. It also converts your PC to an equivalent of Ryzen 9 7900 (non X).

The work generator is spitting out tasks faster than the workers are capable of processing them. Good.

Available Tasks are still at Zero. What is being done to address this state of affairs?
6) Message boards : Number crunching : EPYC server seems to have incorrect data with a new BOINC (Message 3229)
Posted 29 May 2023 by Technologov
Hardware: Dual AMD EPYC 7742; 128-cores; 256-threads; I have committed 160-threads to BOINC.

Software: It is running Debian's version of BOINC 7.20.x + Linux Debian 12 O.S. (from Debian 12 "bookworm" repo)

1.
benchmark
Measured floating point speed 1000 million ops/sec
Measured integer speed 1000 million ops/sec
---
why those numbers? Seems like an over-flow.

1.a. Threadripper 3990X shows a better numbers:
Measured floating point speed 7370.21 million ops/sec
Measured integer speed 140558.86 million ops/sec
(I have not validated if those are correct or not; but a TR-3990X should perform like 3x AMD Ryzen 9 3950X or 4x AMD Ryzen 9 3900X systems)

2. Coprocessors NVIDIA NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 (5926MB) driver: 525.99 OpenCL: 3.0

Should write NVIDIA only once. (on older drivers with 430.xx series there was no such problem) -- NVIDIA drivers have changed since the old times, so now it is both a vendor string and part of the GPU model string.

3.IP address = ""
returns me a blank string. Why ? (Computer 86352)

3.a. Threadripper 3990X, which has an older Debian (v11) and older BOINC (7.16.16) works correctly, and returns a correct string. (Computer 83458)

AMD Zen 2 cores are an equivalent of older Intel Skylake cores. (6th Gen up to 10th Gen Core i7 chips). They are significantly slower than newer Intel 12th and 13th gen Core i7 chips.

I dedicate 50% threads to BOINC (WCG/SiDock/Rosetta/TN-Grid) and 50% to Stockfish Fishtest chess.

I propose to make work units made of 1150 chunks x 40 WUs per gene.

Those will take 2x longer than now. Currently I complete a work unit in 2 hours on my Core i9 9900K desktop. So 2x more = 4 hours per work unit, which is not much, assuming that checkpoints work correctly, between PC reboots. Double the deadline too.

This should double Work generation effectiveness, and load my servers with some good work ;)

This should allow us to complete V. Vinifera project in about 1.5 months !

But if we do make bigger Work-units, please make sure to adjust "deadline" too.

Since I have some extra Linux server capacity, I can definitely accept more BOINC work. So whatever is easier for work-generator to generate ...
12) Message boards : Number crunching : OUT of tasks (Message 3210)
Posted 25 May 2023 by Technologov
Maybe try generating 2x bigger work units, that take 2x more CPU time to process ? +deadline must be 2x longer, obviously.

Assuming that "checkpointing" is implemented in this app... is it ? (if a home PC suddenly reboots)

The work generator will magically output 2x more work.

We are at 0 (Zero) available tasks again.

I suggest running multiple work generating in parallel

Posted 23 May 2023 by Technologov
I don't like your definition of a work unit. A work unit is one unit that BOINC worker downloads aka "expansion" in your term is a "work unit" in my term.

"Work unit" = 1 unit of work downloaded by BOINC = 1 task

What you have there is not a work unit but kore like a gene-slice

Anyway we need more work units and bigger queue on the BOUNC server side of those available work units

> Another solution to this problem is to double workunit lenght

But generating longer (or larger?) work units are harder or the same as small work units ?
So they will take up 6 hours of CPU time rather than 3 hours on average ?

Nah, they have upgraded the storage system recently with SSDs and new OS/ new software, so I think It would handle the load

We have completed 5% of the project in only 8 days, that's Great !

It suggests that 100/5 = 20, meaning 20x more to go in 8 days = 160 days, or 5.5 months! Meaning we should complete this project *this year* around November or December. But we can do even better, if we don't starve our work servers (nodes) and generate data in parallel. Currently there are ZERO owrk units available.

This would allow to double up our efforts and finish this project, V. Vinefera in about 3 months.

Theoretically AVX2+FMA should be most energy efficient
19) Message boards : Number crunching : OUT of tasks (Message 3187)
Posted 22 May 2023 by Technologov
I think it's a good time to start now, and keep doing so until we have at least 10k work units available for download. This will allow to finish the V. Vinefera project in only a few months.
20) Message boards : Number crunching : OUT of tasks (Message 3184)
Posted 21 May 2023 by Technologov
Since there are 22393 genes in V. Vinefera project, could we run 22393 work-unit generators in parallel, on different servers?
