I'm getting an error "disk limit exceeded" on quite a few tasks (about 25% of them) from one computer only out of my 4. There is no disk space shortage (I have 12GB free), and I haven't specified a limit for disk space in BOINC. Any ideas what's going on?

http://gene.disi.unitn.it/test/result.php?resultid=19495327

Just started in the last few days, changes made to the machine that might be the cause are:
1) Some windows updates (including a major one).
2) A different (very old 4MB) graphics card was inserted into the machine (just for display purposes, not crunching).
3) Malwarebytes changed from the free version (run on demand) to the trial full version (realtime).

Please double-check if your BOINC client has enough disk space available, I do not remember the defaults, look at 'Computing preferences', disk space: use no more than... also 'use no more than x% of the total'.

Hope this helps.

The machine has about 20GB free (not 12GB as I misremembered above).

Set to:
"Use at most 0GB disk space" (which means no limit).
"Leave at most 0GB disk space free"
"Use at most 0% of total disk space"
"Write to disk at most every 30 seconds"
"Use at most 0% of page file"

These are the settings it's always had, and the settings my other 3 machines have. And the problems only started on this one machine a few days ago. It's doing the same with the two other projects (SRBase and Yafu).

P.S. I wasn't emailed when you replied, yet I'm subscribed to the thread.

"Use at most 0% of total disk space"

I'm not sure this is relevant but 0% here is not fine. If you want no limit in disk usage it should be 100%

Check "max disk usage" in boinc logs. What does it say?

0% must be ok, that's the default on all my machines and I've never changed it. 0 must mean infinite.

Where do I find the log?

P.S. Uninstalling Malwarebytes fixed the problem with all three projects. Strange as Malwarebytes didn't inform me it was blocking anything.

In the boinc manager under Tools -> Event log

I have just run into this problem with result:

http://gene.disi.unitn.it/test/result.php?resultid=22126608

error is: 25/10/2017 16:00:16 | TN-Grid Platform | Aborting task 80341_Vv_VIT-00s0252g00080_wu-78_1508934460807_0: exceeded disk limit: 95.66MB > 95.37MB

This is not a problem from my sytem, it has enough free disk space.

I have seen this before on other projects and the cause was a setting on the project side that limited the size the output file could become before it was flagged as a error.

Please check your settings when you generate work.

Edit: it looks like the limit setting is a max of 100.000.000 bytes.

Thank you for the info. I just modified the disk limit (now 200Mb), the workunits that could hit the former limit are the ones with ID from 80321 to 80398.

I've got today three units with this error with IDs out of the range you stated. Wingmen have completed them successfully in some cases so I'm not sure of the conclusion. In my host they have been processed with sse2 instructions and in the case of the successful completion with avx, do they generate different output file sizes?.

Now an avx task errored in the same host of mine so it is no related to the set of instructions...

The content and the size of the output files should match regardless of the application version (the validation of a couple of results is a simple byte-by-byte comparison), so this shouldn't be the origin of the error. (I have to further investigate)
